getting solstone on windows

on windows, you can either install the journal itself on this pc, or pair the solstone app with a journal running elsewhere.

| | solstone | your journal | |---|---|---| | mac | ✓ | ✓ | | linux | ✓ | ✓ | | windows | ✓ | ✓ |

running the journal on this pc

the journal installs on windows 10 (22H2) or 11 on a 64-bit intel or amd pc with no administrator rights needed:

solstone journal setup

a new journal on windows starts closed to other devices on your network, so windows doesn't ask about the firewall when you install it or run it for the first time. if you already paired a device from somewhere other than this computer, or turned on agents on your network, it stays open to devices on your network. to pair the solstone app on this same pc, open the network page in the journal, choose "pair a device", then "pair the solstone app on this computer".

pair the solstone app to a journal on this pc with solstone 2.0.12 or later. an older solstone app closes instead of pairing.

the journal on windows can now install the local thinking model too, from local setup in the journal's thinking app, on a compatible GPU. agents on this pc can connect to your journal the same way they do on mac and linux, and agents on your wifi or VPN can too once you turn that on in the agents app; each agent needs a pairing code from your journal. with journal 2.0.32 or later, agents anywhere, like Claude on the web, can reach it too, at its own address through solstone.me, a paid relay sol pbc runs. you turn solstone.me on in the agents app, approve it in the services portal, and manage what connects in the agents app. with journal 2.0.34 or later, you can use your own public hostname instead, on a server you control; the agents app shows you what it needs and how to set it up. confidential processing isn't available on windows yet.

with journal 2.0.34 or later, an android phone can pair to a windows journal over the private network, which runs through a paid relay sol pbc operates and you turn on from your journal and the services portal. the phone needs solstone 2.1.19 or later: get it from our own download page, solstone.app/download/android, because earlier versions can show the journal as paired while the phone says it didn't go through. pairing on your home network without the relay, pairing an iphone, and pairing another computer to a windows journal haven't been tested yet. pair the solstone app on the same pc for now.

updating means running the newer installer; nothing updates itself yet. uninstalling keeps your journal folder.

pairing with a journal on a mac or linux machine

if your journal already lives on a mac or linux machine, install the solstone app as a pairing client instead:

on first launch, point the solstone app at the journal running on your mac or linux machine. once it's paired, everything you share on this pc goes into that journal too.

the "unknown publisher" / SmartScreen prompt

windows may warn about an unrecognized publisher or show a SmartScreen prompt the first time you run an installer. the signature is real. sol pbc's code-signing reputation is still building as a newer publisher, and that warning fades as more people install it.
